Not all acne is the same
- Teen acne — driven by the hormonal changes of adolescence; a routine the teen will actually follow matters as much as the prescription.
- Adult acne — linked to hormones, stress, products and lifestyle; often more persistent and mark-prone.
- Hormonal acne — typically along the jawline and chin, often deeper and cyclical. In many women it relates to PMOS (polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome, formerly PCOS), where skin care works alongside a hormonal review with your doctor.
How treatment works
Treatment is chosen after assessing your acne type, severity and skin: suitable topicals and routines; oral medication where needed — including isotretinoin for severe or persistent acne, prescribed and monitored appropriately; and in-clinic options such as chemical peels once active breakouts settle. Acne marks and scars are addressed in sequence, after control is achieved.
When to see a dermatologist
If breakouts are persistent, deep or scarring, keep returning despite over-the-counter care, or are affecting confidence — an assessment helps guide care early, before marks accumulate.
Frequently asked questions
Can hormonal (PMOS) acne be treated?
Yes — dermatologist-led skin treatment works alongside a review of the hormonal side with your doctor. Improvement builds over weeks to months on a tailored plan.
Is isotretinoin safe?
Isotretinoin is an established treatment for severe or persistent acne, used safely under a dermatologist's supervision with recommended monitoring. It must not be used in pregnancy; suitability is assessed individually.
Can acne scars be removed?
Acne marks and scars can be substantially improved with treatments chosen for the scar type — addressed once active acne is controlled.
How long before I see results?
Most acne treatments show meaningful change over 6–12 weeks. Realistic timelines are discussed at your consultation.
